Andrew Weaver responds to BC Supreme Court Ruling on Contaminated Soil Dump at Shawnigan Lake
For Immediate Release

Victoria B.C. – Andrew Weaver, Leader of the B.C. Green Party and MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head issued the following statement in response to the BC Supreme Court Ruling that a contaminated landfill is not a permitted land use at South Island Aggregates Quarry:

“I want to recognize the hard work of Shawnigan Lake residents in coming together as a community and standing up for their rights in the face of government inaction. This is a vindication of their concerns, and wouldn’t have been possible without their tireless effort.”

“I look forward to reviewing the ruling and working with local politicians and residents to ensure that we continue to move this issue forward in a way that protects the rights of the Shawnigan Lake community.”

Thanks for all your hard work! Mike Kelly and his goons leave a wreckage in the wake of anything that they do! We are having issues with other things that he’s been involved in. If you would like to hear more and maybe help email me @ Sebastien 110@hotmail.com!

    You rock!

    Way to go folks!

Perhaps now our employees (“the Government”) will get the picture that we are in charge, not them them and their cronie backroom deals!

This should also be a huge ‘wake-up’ call for all of us….water sheds are the life blood of our existence. Garbage and contaminated soils are the results of greed…example: The horribly contaminated water table, air and now surface soils in Cedar that have ruined the Reservation Lands of the Snuneymuxw in the Nanaimo River Estuary(Cedar Road & Clifford). Mt. Methane(the dump) was full 20 years ago! The good thing is the gas is being collected, but the water table holds dreadful poisons. Smarten up BC!

so grateful for all the work that the Shawinigan lake resident have done to bring this all to a head .We in Campbell River are under the gun as Uplands applies for a contaminated dump side that is in the same area as our drinking supply – hopefully they will be shot down tonight -but the supreme court ruling should also apply to us

Due to the incredible work and support of so many people we are victorious! But, please let’s consider this to be a victory not only for Shawnigan Lake residents, but for all the other sites across our Province that are experiencing the same challenges. Note to our elected officials: You work for us, to protect us and our environment, and you simply cannot discount our power, and our rights. Big business does not trump the little folk. We win a nifty prize, for which we shouldn’t have had to fight 4 years. OK, now the cleanup.

Thank you Andrew Weaver! Your continued support throughout has been so very much appreciated!!
Now we need to get that contamination out of our watershed…and the crap identified and dealt with legally from Lot 21! ALL Canadians deserve to have our fresh waters protected…new legislation both Provincially and Federally need to step up and ensure no other community experiences the trauma Shawnigan has!!
